Su Casa is a non-profit agency in Southeast Los Angeles County that provides assistance and advocacy to victims and survivors, free-of-charge, without regard to race, religion , sexual orientation, or gender.

Mission: To empower individuals and families to live free from domestic abuse and build partnerships with communities to end domestic violence.

Founded in 1979 by a survivor of domestic violence, Su Casa runs four programs designed to assist victims and survivors with their goals in living violence-free lives and to build a Community of Peace. 

YOU MAY BE IN AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP IF:

• You are afraid of your partner's temper.
• Your partner calls you names or belittles you.
• Your partner is jealous.
• Your partner restricts your activities; you have to ask for your partner's permission.
• Your partner slaps, shoves, hits, kicks or throws things at you.

UNDERSTANDING THE VICTIM

The abuser controls the victim with threats, intimidation, deprivation and isolation. The violence may start with a slap or push. Without intervention, the battering only gets worse, many times resulting in severe injuries, and in some cases, death for the victim.

Living in a violent environment creates a constant state of fear. The victim becomes "helpless" and feels there is no way out. The victim then " learns" how to survive the abuse by being submissive, guilty and depressed.

Children reared in violent homes are always victims. They make up 50% of all actual physical abuse cases and suffer tremendous emotional abuse and neglect.

HELPING THE VICTIM

Encourage her/him to:

• Call Su Casa hotline (562) 402-4888.
• Get to a safe place unknown to the abuser.
• Seek medical attention if necessary.
• Call the police and file charges.
• Ask that a police report be taken and be sure to get the case number.
• Take pictures of any injuries.
• File a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) against the abuser.
• File a claim under the Victim Witness Assistance Program (applications are available from the city, district attorney or the local police department.)

Crisis Shelter

A home-like, confidential location where families live free from fear and violence for up to 30 days.

Confidential housing where   families live for up to 12 months.
